Choose who a sequence reaches (stage, customers or landing)
Updated 2026-10-19
In CustomIQ a sequence can go to the whole segment or only part of it: when you ask for it in the IQ chat you choose the audience (a stage such as "qualified", leads or customers only, or an origin landing). Before every send the contact is re-checked, and anyone who starts matching joins on their own.

In the chat: type this phrase in the IQ chat
I want a sequence only for qualified leads.
Who can a sequence target?
Inside a segment, a CustomIQ sequence can go to everyone or only to part of it: a specific lead stage (new, unqualified, qualified, sales-qualified), leads only or customers only, contacts who came through a given landing, or a list of contacts picked one by one. Criteria combine, for example "qualified leads who came through the guide".
How do I choose it from the chat?
Ask for the sequence in the IQ Chat, for example "I want a sequence only for qualified leads.". After you choose the segment, the chat asks who it targets and offers the options: the whole segment, a stage, leads or customers only, or an origin landing with its contact count. If your first sentence already said it, the question is skipped and the choice is shown. The proposal states how many contacts match the audience right now.
How do I pick contacts one by one?
Not from the chat. On the sequence page, under Sequences, the Audience section lets you switch to "Pick contacts" and tick people from the segment's table before launching. On an active sequence, the "Enroll contacts" button offers to enroll everyone who matches now or to tick specific contacts.
What happens if a contact changes stage?
Before every send CustomIQ re-checks that the contact still matches the audience. If they no longer do (for example, they went from qualified to unqualified), that step is skipped and shows as "no longer matched the audience at that step"; the contact stays enrolled and, if they match again, receives the next one. And while the sequence is active, anyone who starts matching the criteria joins on their own, unless the audience is a hand-picked list. A contact's stage is changed in Segments.
What is charged?
The same as any sequence: the content generation when you approve it. Choosing the audience, editing it or enrolling contacts costs nothing.
Steps
- Ask for the sequence. Type in the IQ chat, for example, "I want a sequence only for qualified leads.".
- Choose the audience. After the segment, the chat asks who it targets (the whole segment, a stage, leads or customers only, or an origin landing).
- Check the contact count. The proposal shows how many contacts match the audience right now, before anything is generated.
- Adjust or hand-pick. On the sequence page you can edit the audience or tick specific contacts before launching.
- Launch. On launch the matching contacts enter; the summary says how many were left out by the audience.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens if a contact stops matching the audience?
- Their stage is re-checked before every send. If they no longer match, that step is skipped and they stay enrolled; if they match again, they receive the next one.
- Do contacts who change stage after launch enter?
- Yes, while the sequence is active and the audience is rule-based; every few minutes new matches are enrolled. Hand-picked lists never grow on their own.
- Can I pick specific contacts from the chat?
- No, the chat works with criteria. To tick contacts one by one use the sequence page before launching, or the "Enroll contacts" button once it is active.
- Can I change the audience of an active sequence?
- Yes, from its page. The change applies to already-enrolled contacts at their next step and to anyone entering from then on.
